When Will My Baby Smile? Baby Developmental Milestones

When Will My Baby Smile?

Patiently waiting for that first gummy grin? Smiling is one of the very first exciting milestones your baby will master - before rolling, crawling, and walking.

Not only does it signal that your baby sees you, but on a developmental level, it also means your baby is beginning to:

  • Recognize you, as well as other familiar faces
  • Process visual and emotional information
  • Start to show that they love you!

When Do Babies Start Smiling?

Most babies begin smiling somewhere around 6 to 8 weeks. This is also known as the “social smile”, where your baby intentionally smiles in response to your face or your voice, rather than in response to events such as passing gas or sleeping.

Some babies may show early hints closer to 4 weeks, but every baby achieves this at their own pace.

Reflex vs. Social Smiles

Maybe you could’ve sworn you saw your little one smile? Here’s an easy way to tell:

Reflex smiles

  • Happen randomly, often during sleep
  • Not triggered by interaction
  • Linked to your baby’s developing nervous system

Social smiles

  • Happen in response to your face, voice, or touch
  • Feels more intentional
  • Often repeated during interaction

Timeline - When you can expect

  • 0–4 weeks: Mostly reflex smiles, often during sleep
  • 4–6 weeks: Brief, sometimes uncertain smiles during awake time
  • 6–8 weeks: More consistent social smiling begins
  • 2–3 months: Smiles become more frequent and responsive

How to Encourage Your Baby’s First Smile

You don’t need to “teach” your baby to smile, but there are also ways to encourage more of them:

1. Get face-to-face

2. Use a warm, expressive voice

Singing, chatting, or even narrating how your day went.

3. Respond your baby’s cues

If they smile or make sounds, act excited and smile back at them.

5. Keep playtime short and light

A round of peekaboo! You can also use age appropriate toys such as the Thiingy to capture your baby’s attention.

Why Do Babies Smile in Their Sleep?

Smiles that happen during sleep are usually due to their nervous system practicing, not a response to something external. They are typically:

  • Reflexive
  • Linked to brain development
  • Not tied to dreams or emotions

What If My Baby Isn’t Smiling Yet?

Keep in mind that development isn’t linear, and that as your child grows, they focus on different skills at different times.

It also can be personality-driven: some babies are naturally just more expressive than others, while some may need more time to warm up for interactions.

Is It Normal If My Baby Hasn’t Smiled Yet?

This can feel like a big milestone, so it’s normal to be discouraged if you haven’t been able to catch their grin yet.

You might consider speaking with a healthcare provider if around the 10-12 week mark, your baby:

  • Doesn’t smile
  • Doesn’t make eye contact
  • Doesn’t respond to your voice

It’s easy to turn milestones into pressure points, but smiling isn’t a test your baby needs to pass. After their first smile it may take a while before it becomes consistent!
