Every baby bottle box in the aisle says BPA-free. That sentence stopped separating good bottles from ordinary ones about a decade ago, and most brands have not updated the pitch.

You are standing in the bottle aisle holding two boxes. One says Tritan. One says polypropylene. Both say BPA-free, both say dishwasher safe, and neither tells you what that actually means for the bottle you will be washing at 2am for the next fourteen months. The label is written to reassure you, not to inform you.
So here is the honest version. BPA is not the thing to worry about anymore, because regulators in both Canada and the United States removed it from baby bottles years ago. What still differs between these two plastics is how they handle heat, how they age, how much they weigh, and how they look after two hundred wash cycles. Those are the things worth choosing on.
What Tritan actually is
Tritan is a copolyester made by the Eastman Chemical Company. It is not a generic material category like "plastic" or "nylon" — it is one company's branded polymer, which is why you see the trademark symbol on packaging. It is built from dimethyl terephthalate and cyclohexanedimethanol, and the combination is what gives it glass-like transparency along with enough toughness to survive being dropped on a kitchen floor.
Eastman states that Tritan is "completely free of bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S and any other bisphenol compounds as well as estrogenic and androgenic activity." That is the manufacturer speaking about its own product, which is worth knowing when you read it. It is a specific, falsifiable claim rather than a vague reassurance, and it is the reason Tritan became a common polycarbonate replacement after the BPA rules changed.
On heat, Eastman says the FDA has cleared Tritan Renew, the recycled-content version, for food contact "at temperatures up to and including 100°C (212°F)." That covers dishwashers and boiling water. What polypropylene actually is
Polypropylene, usually shortened to PP and marked with recycling code 5, is the workhorse plastic of the baby aisle. The US Food and Drug Administration regulates it for food contact under 21 CFR 177.1520 as an olefin polymer, made by "the catalytic polymerization of propylene." It has been cleared for food use for decades, it is inexpensive, and it is light.
Its trade-off is optical. Polypropylene is naturally cloudy rather than clear, and it tends to go chalky and scratched over time, especially after repeated hot washes. That does not make it unsafe. It makes it harder to see the milk line, and harder to see whether the bottle is genuinely clean, which is a practical matter when you are checking a bottle in dim light. The BPA question is mostly settled
This is the part the packaging never explains. Both countries acted on BPA in baby bottles a long time ago, and the results were measured.
Health Canada "took action by banning the manufacture, importation, sale and advertising of polycarbonate baby bottles that contain BPA." Its own follow-up evaluation reported that since that ban and the phase-out of BPA in liquid infant formula packaging, "there has been a 96% decrease in exposure of infants to BPA who were bottle fed."
In the United States, the relevant rule is 21 CFR 177.1580(d), which states that polycarbonate resins may be used for food contact "except in infant feeding bottles (baby bottles) and spill-proof cups, including their closures and lids." That exception was added in July 2012.
One honest footnote, because the internet usually skips it. The US Food and Drug Administration amended those regulations on the grounds that the use had been abandoned by industry, not because it had made a finding of harm. The agency states separately that its "current perspective, based on its most recent safety assessment, is that BPA is safe at the current levels occurring in foods." Manufacturers moved first; the rules followed. Both things are true at once, and a brand that tells you otherwise is selling fear.
A "BPA-free" sticker on a new baby bottle in Canada or the US describes the law, not the brand. It is the floor, not a feature.

Which one to pick
If you want one answer: choose the clear material if you will keep the bottles for a second baby, and choose polypropylene if you want the lightest, cheapest bottle and do not mind that it clouds.
The reasoning is unglamorous. A bottle that stays transparent is a bottle you can inspect. You can see residue in the shoulder, you can see the milk line without turning it to the light, and you can see when the nipple has started to discolour. Over a year of night feeds that visibility is worth more than the twenty or thirty dollars between the two options.
Polypropylene deserves more credit than the premium brands give it. It is genuinely light, which matters once your baby starts holding the bottle, and it is cheap enough to own twelve of. If your bottles live in a daycare bag and get replaced every few months anyway, paying extra for optical clarity you will not preserve is a poor trade.
That last point is the one most comparisons miss. When a box says Tritan or polypropylene, it is describing the bottle body. The collar is very often polypropylene regardless, and the nipple is silicone in nearly every modern bottle. Judging a whole bottle by the one word on the front is how people end up disappointed by a purchase that met its own spec. The same logic applies to nipple flow rates, where the material matters far less than the shape.
The recycling claim you should not believe
Plenty of marketing copy, including an older version of this very page, has implied that a clear copolyester bottle is an environmentally easy choice because it can be recycled. That claim does not survive contact with the manufacturer's own documentation.
Eastman states plainly that resin code 7 is a catch-all for "other" resins, and that "at this time, the recycling infrastructure does not exist to be able to properly recycle Tritan, Tritan Renew or any of the RIC code 7 materials." Polypropylene, code 5, is accepted by many more municipal programmes, though acceptance still varies by city.
So on curbside recyclability, polypropylene wins and it is not close. The honest environmental case for a durable clear bottle is different: it is that one bottle which survives two children beats six that crack, cloud, or get thrown out. That is a longevity argument, not a recycling one, and it should be made as such.

Common questions
Is Tritan plastic safe for babies?
Yes, on the evidence available. Eastman states it contains no BPA, BPS or other bisphenols, and copolyesters are cleared for food contact. No plastic carries an absolute safety guarantee, and results apply to the material as tested rather than to every finished product made from it. If you want to reduce plastic exposure generally, glass is the alternative with the longest track record.
Is Tritan better than polypropylene?
It depends on what you are optimising. Tritan holds clarity and resists clouding, so it inspects better and ages better. Polypropylene is lighter, cheaper and far easier to recycle. For a bottle you keep for years, clarity usually wins. For a bottle that lives in a daycare bag, polypropylene is the sensible buy. Can Tritan bottles go in the dishwasher?
Yes. Eastman describes "outstanding durability in both residential and commercial dishwasher applications," and reports FDA clearance for Tritan Renew in food contact up to 100°C (212°F). Follow the individual bottle's instructions, since collars and nipples may have lower limits than the body.
Do I still need to worry about BPA in baby bottles?
No, not for new bottles bought in Canada or the United States. Health Canada banned the manufacture, import, sale and advertising of polycarbonate baby bottles containing BPA, and 21 CFR 177.1580(d) excludes polycarbonate resins from infant feeding bottles and sippy cups. Older or imported hand-me-downs are the case where it is still worth checking.
Is Tritan recyclable?
Not in practice through household collection. Eastman states that the infrastructure "does not exist to be able to properly recycle Tritan, Tritan Renew or any of the RIC code 7 materials." Polypropylene, code 5, is accepted much more widely, subject to your local programme.
What material is Tritan, exactly?
A copolyester made by Eastman from dimethyl terephthalate and cyclohexanedimethanol. It is a specific branded polymer, not a general class, which is why one manufacturer's documentation governs what can be said about it.
Does the material stop colic or reflux?
No. Bottle body material has no established effect on colic or reflux. Venting design and feeding pace are the factors with a plausible mechanism, and no bottle prevents these for every baby. Speak to your paediatrician about persistent feeding problems.
